AFC Waverton Open Evening on 25th January

AFC Waverton is holding an “Open Evening” on Wednesday 25th January from 7.30 – 8.30pm at Christleton Primary School. At this meeting, we will be sharing a bit more about the Club, it’s history, it’s present status – but more importantly we will be sharing a bit more about the future development of the Club and the opportunities for you to get involved.

Since its formation approx 14 years ago, AFC Waverton has grown into the largest Junior Football Club in the Chester and District League and one of the largest and most successful in the whole of Cheshire. With success comes the need for an ever growing team of volunteers to help run and administer the Club and as it enters it’s next stage of development and growth, we are looking for additional input from parents/guardians who are willing to get involved in the exciting future of the Club.

We would like to encourage as many as possible to come along to find out more about the Club and if you could join us on the 25^th we would be delighted to see you there.

Note that U7s Training at Old Hall will be cancelled on the 25th.

Waverton 6-2 Saughall

Fantastic performance from the whole team today in a tight match with Saughall!

The scoreline might not suggest it was a tight match but it was only some superb play in the last quarter that saw us pull away comfortably with some delightful goals from Charlie and Ben supported by solid keeping, defensive and midfield play.

The start of the match was very strange in that the first 3 goals were all own goals! Unfortunately Myles, drafted in at the last minute (thx!), scored two of these, although it was great determined play that saw him track back in an attempt to clear the ball. Had he not been there Saughall would have scored anyway so well done Myles for a great effort!

I have to congratulate Alfie for a really superb defensive display today, he got stuck in, made many important tackles, read the game very well indeed and cleared everything that came near our goal!

After going 2-1 down we settled into the game more and Charlie really took hold of the game. In an unaccustomed sweeper role (thanks, I know you wanted to roam forward!) he steadied the whole team, took control of the game and started to spread the ball around and forage forward at every opportunity.

Ably assisted by Leo - who was always in the right place at the right time - and Ben Farley who caused so many problems for Saughall with his running, closing down and excellent dribbling - how quick is he!! Henry added to the forward pressure and we scored a couple of goals early in the second half to take a 3-2 lead into the last quarter.

This is where Ben and Charlie really pressed forward, assisted by Joshua and Harry, and we scored 3 more goals. One of them was a particularly impressive passage of play between Ben and Charlie, playing one-twos to wriggle through the packed Saughall defence with Charlie slotting the ball into an open net. Really fantastic play that drew rounds of applause from all sides of the pitch.

Overall I am so proud of the way the whole team played today, really solid, always keeping shape, breaking down Saughall attacks and progressing up the field with menace! The goals we scored were a just reward for this superb all round performance.

Result does not show the great performance from all. We played a good organised team ( when we all found the pitch ).

After going ahead from great goals from Dan 2 , Alexander 1 after a great run from Ben White. we could not hold out to the pressure the villa boys who kept on going. ( as a wolves fan that hurt to write )

Thanks to Josh And Ben for sharing the goal keeper role during the match.

All the boys gave thier best and did not stop trying for the whole match.

Waverton 4-2 Princess Villa

What a game! Really well done everyone, lots of closing down, great tacking and movement plus some really well taken goals.

We started the game with a high tempo and forced the play towards the Villa goal. Ted scored to put us in the lead and Louis added a second before half time. Both goals followed some great passing movements with Ben, Kit and Tom moving the ball quickly to the strikers.

A special mention goes out to the defensive unit of Jacob in goal with James Lathaen and Harry (now called "the rock"!) who closed down quickly, cleared the ball well and tackled everything that came near them!

Kit, Ben and Alex were also great in midfield, keeping their positions and tracking forwards and back the while game.

In the second half Louis secured his hat-trick with 2 very well taken goals, the second smashed high into the corner of the net after some great play from midfield released him in on goal. Fantastic striking!

Villa scored 2 goals from well taken moves, they deserved these as their play and attitude was spot on.

Congratulations to the whole squad today for a memorable win. We all enjoyed watching the game and I'm sure you all enjoyed it too!

Man of the Match goes to Louis who scored a fantastic hat-trick.

A great performance from AFC waverton against newton in the first match of the double header fixture today.

A close match ended in a 3-0 defeat (although there was some doubt about the second we respect the referees decision).

Josh was unlucky not to get a goal in the final quarter and Jacobs lone run through the oppostions defence deserved a goal.

A fantastic match and a fair result.

Alex scored a great goal to give us a well deserved lead and in the first half especially we had plenty of chances to score. We kept the lead in this well contested game until the final quarter. Helsby scored 2 in the last 10 minutes to snatch the lead but a goal direct from a free kick in the dying seconds saw us secure a well deserved draw.

Well done everyone, there was some very good play today. Hope you all had fun!

Guys it was an awesome performance from everyone from Ben in goal to the
late sub of Charlie.
Buckets of Goals from Louis , Myles , Tom And Charlie well done boys you
certainly brought your shooting boots.

Goal of the game had to be Louis long range effort where he passed the ball
into the bottom corner from outside the area like Mario Balotelli effort
against Man Utd the other week.

The high light of the game for me was the effort and team work everyone of
you showed no one stopped running all day well done boys you where
fantastic.

Also thanks to the parents on the side lines for getting behind every
player and the encouragement was well received.

What a great game, I think we did very well despite the scoreline, well done everyone!

We started quite slowly, going 2 goals behind from good goals by Newscene but our general play was good and I knew we could get back into the game.

We battled back with a fantastic break-away goal by Jacob who hit a cross from the right first time into the back of the net. What a finish!

We then equalised when Leo took a pass in the area and cooly slotted the ball into the net past an advancing keeper. A finish like this is really good at this age group so well done!

We lost our way a little bit in the second half, lots of subs, a few injuries and players all wanting to play up front - isn't that always the way!

Congratulations to Newscene, they did play well, especially Zak who was outstanding.

Man of the match for Waverton is Leo, he worked hard all game and was everywhere in both defence and attack. Great goal too!

Special mention to Joshua McAndrew who was outstanding in goal.

Fantastic result and a fantastic performance from everyone From Little Tom in goal to the 4 goal haul from Waverton's answer to Kevin Doyle - Dan.

Goal scorers 4 from Dan - 2 from Charlie ( including a rocket of a free Kick ), 1 from Ben Farley and 1 from Myles everyone one of them where awesome.

The result does not reflect the performance. The Boys ran their hearts out. We had the majority of the possession just could not break the park down. Stunning goal from Ted from my view point it looked like a Stevie Gerrard special from about 25 yds!!!

AFC WAVERTON FOOTBALL FESTIVAL - SATURDAY 18th JUNE

The AFC Waverton Football Festival will be held at 9am on Saturday 18th June on the Queen's Playing Field, Waverton (behind the Village Hall). The focus of the Festival is on participation rather than competition and all teams will be of mixed ability.

This year we will be raising funds to support the ever-growing cost of running our club and a percentage of profits will go to support a Football Development Programme at an orphanage in Romania. We are also collecting unwanted football boots (clean) & kits to send out to the orphanage. Please bring them with you on the day.

Refreshments including bacon and sausage butties & hot and cold drinks will be available on the day as well as a prize draw, penalty competition and other attractions.

The cost of player entry is £5.

Huge congratulations to Waverton Wasps who won convincingly on Saturday (I can only report on this game as I didn't see the other game).

The game started with Newton camping in our half but after sorting ourselves out with ample shouts of "positions" we really imposed ourselves on the game all over the pitch. We went 3-0 up with goals from Louis (2) and Josh (an own goal really but we will give it to him!) before Newton came back with their first goal which skipped off the quick surface past Ben Ward in goal despite last-ditch tackles by Daniel and Tom Steward-Smith.

We then went 4-1 up when Louis capped a fantastic hat trick with a mazy run through the midfield and smashed the ball in. We then got a free kick about 10 yard out and Josh found the top corner, over the wall, with a brilliant strike to make it 5-1. Newton put on the pressure but the goalkeeper Daniel and defence of Ben Ward, William Thistle and Tom Steward-Smith stood firm, and the midfield of Henry, Ben White and Stanley grew stronger. A great goal from Newton made the scores 5-2 before Ben White took the ball from the center of the pitch all the way to the goal before unleashing a powerful shot inside the left post to make it 6-2.

There was still time for a 7th and William Thistle duly obliged with a smartly taken shot, creeping in at the Newton near post - a just reward for having a great game!

Throughout the match I was amazed to see the guys playing so well, against a good Newton side, and I am delighted that we played so well in all areas: defence, midfield and attack. Well done everyone for being so organised, everyone running to their positions when asked! It's really satisfying to see the guys in the pictures above having so much fun despite the weather ;) Bravo!!!

Well done to the Waverton team who won 3 matches and lost only 1 in the tournament today.

Terrific performances all round, in particular (from what I saw):

Dan and Myles - a wonderful striking partnership growing here
Connor - terrific defensive play, always putting pressure on the opposition

Thanks to all the parents for their great support at the U6's first official match against Upton.

Following a slow start in one of the games the lads showed real desire to get back into it and gave a great second half performance before going on to win their second game. The other team played out a draw before a great volley from a corner sealed a win in their second game.

Thanks to the Upton lads and coaches for a great first match experience and we look forward to the return fixture.

NEWS - Waverton U6’s will play home & away friendly matches with Upton U6s.

This is the first time our lads will have played a match against any other team so the focus will be on having fun and enjoying the experience of a competitive game. Winning would be good!!

Here are the details you need :

Home Tournament : Saturday 26th February

Venue : Guilden Sutton School

Format : Upton and Waverton will have two teams of 7 a side so we will play 4 matches in total. Waverton coaches will referee.

Timing : 10:30 Arrive and warm up/get ready for matches. 11:00 Match 1 & 2. 11:30 Match 3 & 4. 12:00 Finish

Match Rules : 10 minutes per half, 20 minutes in total. Corners, throw ins etc as usual but no penalties.

Away Tournament : Saturday 26th March

All details as per the above, but the venue will be Lime Wood Fields. Upton coaches will referee.

We have a new training venue: Guilden Sutton Primary School

Due to the muddy pitches at Waverton/Christleton we were being moved around a lot and it makes sense to train on pitches that aren't used as frequently. Many thanks go to Steve (Frankies dad) for sorting this out for us, as well as Cathy Crowe (Head of Guilden Sutton) for allowing us to use the school field.

NB. Please can everyone park in the Village Hall car park (off Hilltop Road) and NOT the school / roads nearby.

Training 9-10am every Saturday as usual.

Many thanks to everyone who came to the Waverton Festival on Saturday. It was a great day with even better weather! The club raised about £2000 which is going to be used to further the excellent work the chairman Graham Frost and everyone involved in the club has done this past year.

On a personal note, we have had many comments from parents and onlookers that the kids have really improved this season. We try and make it a fun atmosphere to get them to love the game first and foremost and I'm sure the kids have enjoyed it as much as we have!

Many thanks to you guys for taking time out to bring the kids to training too. It's great to see so many coming along and hopefully next season we will even have a match or two against other clubs - which will be a new experience!
